The WCWD Environment Committee hosted a Monarch Pop-Up Event on Friday, September 11, 2026.
Mother Nature gave us a glorious day with 16 members attending this event. Special thanks to our Chairperson, Patty Wyzykowski, for hosting this event in her beautiful backyard haven.
We began our event with a moment of silence for those who lost their lives 25 years ago on 9/11.
The committee members prepared an educational presentation complete with visual aids informing the attendees of the migration of the Monarch butterfly, the life stages from egg to butterfly, the food sources and nectar flowers available, the predators that hamper their life, plus fun and interesting facts.
Several monarchs were released and attendees were able to see chrysalis and even eggs and live caterpillars (from tiny to large).
After the formal program, a backyard tour was given to see the main food source of milkweed, plus various nectar flowers for Monarch and other butterflies. We all relaxed and socialized while enjoying refreshments of delicious lemonade, water, butterfly sugar cookies, brownies, spritz cookies, pretzels and fresh fruit.
Each attendee went home with a favor bag full of candies, a monarch bookmark and monarch magnet, along with a large beautifully decorated Monarch sugar cookie! This event was so well-received that we may want to repeat it again next year!

Other News
We will continue to collect #5 plastic prescription bottles and all plastic caps for recycling at ECOP in Delaware. Please feel free to bring your plastics to our meetings or drop them off at Patty’s house.
