American Heart Month
February is American Heart Month and raises awareness of women’s #1 killer, Cardivascular disease. I found some useful information in the Gloucester County Today newsletter and ways to increase a healthy lifestyle.
- Eat Healthy – of course limit sugar, saturated fats, reduce sodium
- Be Active – try to be active for at least 2.5 hours per week ( that can be 30 minutes 5 times a week)
- Mange your weight – this is so important and yet so hard with so many temptations out there
- Check your numbers – something else which is so important. especially as we are aging. Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol
- Reduce Stress – finding ways to unwind and reduce stress is individual. Exercising with yoga, Tai Chi or meditation are great examples of how to reduce stress. Let’s face it, we all have stress, and finding ways that work will help reduce our risk of a stroke too
- Quit Smoking – cigarettes,
cigars and even e-cigarettes are harmful to our heart and blood vessels— but we all know that, right? - Take care of your medications – as much as I hate the idea of needing cholesterol or heart medication they are meant to treat, prevent, or manage illness.
Spring Project
Toiletries and gently used pocketbooks needed. Please let me know what you plan to bring so we don’t double up on supplies. Looking for 30-40 each. Please only small size, NOT large bottles.
We are interested in hotel size/travel sizes of the following products:
- Shampoo
- Creme rinse
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Floss
- Soap
- Comb
- Tissues
- Gum
- Lifesavers
- Emery boards
- Small feminine products(pads)
Please remember to put a memo in or on your bag as to in-kind donation estimate or actual cost and who is donating the supplies.
We probably will get together to fill the purses in late April or the beginning of May. So if interested in helping let one of us know.
We thank you in advance for all your help with this project, which we have been doing every year and is so appreciated by the recipients.
Let’s Get Moving
We had a nice group of walkers last month at the Deptford Mall. Two miles seems like a lot until you are walking with your friends and club sisters; then it becomes fun and much easier. Put a note on your calendar for the first Tuesday of every month. March 4th will probably be at the mall again, but if the weather lets up we will switch to an outside location.
Also, our Riverwinds Community Center offers a lot of different exercises and you might even see a few familiar faces (see photo Peg S. and I). Just today I saw a new exercise class which was a pop-up event – Cardio Drumming. Looked very cool. I saw it in The Villages several years ago, but like today I did not get to do it. Maybe we could bring it to a club meeting.😂 For the month of January, our club sisters engaged in 504 hours and that is awesome. Glad to see we don’t have quitters in our club. Let’s Keep Moving!!
