The month of March was cut short as we were halfway through the READ ACROSS AMERICA literacy program when our schools were closed. Many members helped with the enormous task of preparing hundreds of bookmark art packets for Oakview Elementary School. The bookmarks were constructed to help the children recall and retell the story book Watch the Cookie by Nancy Cote.
Thank you to all the volunteers who joined me at the library or took parts and pieces of the bookmark to cut out at home. Your time and effort was so appreciated! I smile when I see the picture of Denise P. all dressed up in her red cape; cardboard chocolate chip cookie in hand. She brought the book to life in a “teachable moment” using her enthusiasm and props to convey the book’s message to the children.
Our readers and art assistants spent two days at Oakview School enjoying each classroom of children and constructing a bookmark with them. We will continue
our ADOPT A SCHOOL Program as the need arises when schools open in the future. I would like to form a committee of members to give input and to brainstorm ideas to further this program in September.
Thanks to all for helping the art department and the CIP Program move forward since we began in January with our goal of needs, literacy and educational support for our community and the elementary children in West Deptford.
