October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Wear your Purple!

Domestic violence is a pervasive crisis that thrives in secrecy, but awareness and open conversation can break the cycle. It is not always marked by physical injuries; control, isolation, and emotional abuse are equally damaging tactics used to dominate a partner.

Consider Sarah and Mark. To their neighbors, they seemed like the perfect couple. But behind closed doors, Mark slowly took control of Sarah’s life. It began with subtle comments about her friends, which eventually escalated into demanding she stop seeing them altogether.

Next came the financial control—criticizing her spending until she handed over her bank passwords. When she tried to speak up, he threatened to leave and take the children. Sarah felt completely isolated, doubting her own reality and walking on eggshells every day.

This scenario illustrates that domestic violence is about power, not just physical force. It often begins so gradually that victims do not realize they are trapped until the control is absolute.

Recognizing the warning signs is the first step toward saving a life. Red flags include a partner who:

• Monitors your phone, location, or social media.
• Cuts you off from family and friends.
• Controls all the finances or prevents you from working.
• Blames you for their abusive behavior.
• Threatens violence against you, your children, or your pets.

Awareness means understanding that leaving an abusive relationship is incredibly difficult and dangerous. Victims often face financial dependence, fear of retaliation, or psychological trauma. Rather than asking, “Why doesn’t she just leave?” we must ask, “How can we safely support them?”

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, you are not alone. Resources are available globally. The telephone number of the Gloucester County SERV hotline is: 866.295.7378.

Donate to DV Shelter

This month, we are collecting cash and $25 Wawa gift cards for the local Domestic Violence shelter. With enough cash donations, we plan to purchase $95 Visa gift cards for women who arrive with absolutely nothing of their own.

Thank you for your continuous support in helping these women rebuild their lives!
