Community Improvement Program

Adopt A School

January 2020 began our Kick Off month to introduce and participate in a yearly Community Improvement Program (CIP). Service work and volunteering within the community can involve an ongoing project of outstanding service to assist our schools in West Deptford. Hence, our “Adopt A School” begins with three goals in mind: needs, literacy, and other educational areas.

The Literacy Coach at Oakview Elementary School has contacted us to help with their READ ACROSS AMERICA activities in March. This is a month-long reading initiative bringing literacy to the young children and their families at Oakview Elementary School. As part of the reading challenge sponsors, supporters, and volunteers will assist the school throughout the school day. We are asking members to sign up at our February club meeting to conduct a book reading/lesson followed by a short art project during the month of March at Oakview School. More details will be provided at our club meeting.

Thus far, three $100.00 ShopRite gift cards have been donated to the three elementary schools in order to meet the requested needs of each school. (Prior principal approved but not needed when gift cards are donated.) Thank you to our members who donated underwear, sweatpants, leggings, and flushable wipes to replenish items needed by school nurses. We will continue to collect these items at our February meeting and only to the end of February. Needed are: girls leggings and sweatpants sizes 5, 6, 7, 8, or XS, S, M. Also, boys sweatpants sizes 5, 6, 7, 8, XS, S, M, with elastic waists/tie in the front please. We suggest the most inexpensive sale items when shopping. Several of the donated items from January were already used, especially the sweatpants. They can also be dropped off to April or Linda J. up to the end of February, as March begins our literacy goal/project.

Thanks, everyone. We are excited about assisting our elementary schools in our community.
